Program outline
In Spring 2020, we will host 7 free workshops for emerging BIPOC artists in music, who self-identify as female, non-binary, or gender diverse. We’ll connect program participants to people working in the music industry, including music journalists, sound engineers, festival programmers, DJs, producers, and musicians.
The mandate of the program is to build a community for BIPOC artists who may not have access to mentors, and provide workshops sharing skills, which are vital to their future success as music professionals, such as songwriting, production, and marketing.
The program will culminate in a celebratory showcase that highlights participants on May 21, 2020.

Workshops
1.
INTRODUCTIONS / BUILDING COMMUNITY (March 21, 2020)
We’ll set the tone for the program and foster a space that nurtures sharing and creativity. What does that look like? We’ll introduce ourselves, provide an overview of the weeks ahead, discuss our personal and collective goals for the program, and start forming a community agreement.

FUTURE FORUM 2020 (March 28, 2020) - Optional
A community event for creative women of colour hosted by The Future is You and Me.

RECORDING STUDIO FIELD TRIP (April 5, 2020)
How do you make the most of your time in the studio? What does the recording process look like? We’ll tour a professional recording studio, learn how they work, and hear from women of colour who have pursued careers in audio engineering, so you feel better equipped and inspired to move forward with your current and future recordings.
4.
MAKING MUSIC VIDEOS (April 18, 2020)
Music videos are a dynamic way to showcase your music. They help you form a visual identity and strengthen your online presence, but if you've never made one, where do you start? In this session, we’ll discuss the work that goes into making music videos, and demystify how to access studios, equipment, and the resources required to create them.
5.
NAVIGATING THE MUSIC INDUSTRY (April 25, 2020)
What change is needed in the music industry for diverse artists to be successful and hold positions of power? How do we make more space for underrepresented artists to thrive?
We’ll hear from a panel of established and emerging leaders who will share about how they’ve navigated the music industry as women of colour, and discuss the work ahead of us when it comes to building a more inclusive future for the music industry.
6.
PUTTING ON SHOWS (May 2, 2020)
In this session, we’ll prepare for our final showcase and learn about organizing and promoting live music events. We’ll hear from local music promoters and cultural organizers about their experiences putting on shows in Vancouver, discuss the ins and outs of how to reach out to venues, book artists, curate inclusive shows, and build strong communities and collectives.
7.
MUSIC, MEDIA, AND MAKING MONEY (May 9, 2020)
The goal for this session is to learn how to finance our projects and put them out into the real world! Get helpful advice on applying for grants, making pitches to reviewers, and getting featured in the media.
8.
FINAL SHOWCASE (May 21, 2020)
We’ll end our journey with a final showcase at The Fox Cabaret that celebrates your talent and brings together our community of friends, funders, speakers, and partners! Details TBD.
